Platelet-Rich Plasma: After Your Treatment

Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is a non-invasive, one-hour procedure done by a practiced pain management doctor at a NJ Pain Care Specialists location.

You will be able to go home the same day, but the length of time before you can return to your normal activities depends on the condition that was treated and which part of your body is involved.

  • Injections in your elbow or shoulder are placed in a sling for 48-hours-to-one-week; and then as you need it for support and comfort.
  • Injections in your ankle (Achilles tendon, peroneal tendon, plantar fascia), must be supported by a walking boot for up to two weeks. (If the injection is on the right side, you will not be able to drive wearing the boot.)
  • Injections in your knee for osteoarthritis, require rest for 24 hours and then you can return to your normal activities. If the injection is in your patellar tendon or quadriceps tendon, your knee will be placed in a knee immobilizer for 1-2 days.
  • Keep in mind that many patients require 3-4 treatments before the injured tissues are completely healed and therapy begins.

At the right time, a specially-designed physical therapy program will be prescribed by your physician to help your newly developed connective tissue mature into healthy and strong tendons or ligaments – so you can get back to enjoying an active, healthy lifestyle as quickly and happily as possible.

Therapy normally begins 1 week after the injection, except perhaps for knee osteoarthritis. Typical physical therapy programs last approximately 12 weeks. Your insurance company usually covers physical therapy, but you should call to confirm

If you are considering treatment with PRP, be sure to check your eligibility with your health insurance carrier. Few insurance plans, including workers’ compensation plans, provide even partial reimbursement.

At the present time, PRP Treatments are not covered by medical insurance.
