PRP: A Giant Step For Healing Plantar Fasciitis

It can happen to you as a weekend warrior or sales associate on your feet all day. Any repeated trauma from overuse or injury can cause Plantar Fasciitis – a condition where thick connective tissue that supports the arch on the bottom of your foot (running from heel bone forward to the ball of the foot) becomes inflamed. An ankle injury can also lead to Plantar Fasciitis, as the loose ankle joint puts unnatural pressure on your foot. You might wake up one day with a burning sensation in the middle of your sole that makes it very difficult to stand from your bed.

Traditional treatments, including braces, stretching and icing can help. Cortisone injections can reduce inflammation, but only temporarily and symptoms often return in a high percentage of patients.

Fortunately, at New Jersey Pain Care Specialists, we offer a safe, effective, non-invasive treatment for Plantar Fasciitis. I’ve often written about Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy – a relatively new procedure that relieves pain and promotes long lasting healing of conditions that include Plantar Fasciitis.

Performed safely in our medical office, PRP therapy relieves pain without the risks of surgery, general anesthesia or hospital stays, and without a prolonged recovery. In fact, many people return to their jobs or other activities right after the one-to-two hour procedure. Top professional athletes, including Kobe Bryant, Tiger Woods, Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova have received PRP for various problems and have credited PRP with their being able to return more quickly to their lucrative careers.

In PRP treatment, a sample of your blood is drawn and spun down in a centrifuge machine to separate out and concentrate the platelets and growth factors for tissue healing. Nothing else is added to your own body fluids, which avoids the risk of allergy, reaction or rejection. The PRP is then injected into your injured area – a purely natural process for not only relieving pain, but also for jumpstarting the healing.

A key is to successful, permanent healing is to provide the treatments to not only the Plantar Fasciitis, but to any ankle problem you may have. It is vital to heal both injuries to the point where you can return to all of the activities you enjoy that depend on a strong, pain-free foot and ankle.

At the present time, PRP Treatments are not covered by medical insurance.
